About the Artists

“Farms, beautiful landscapes and the people who traverse them have always been an inspiration to me, and I hope to share that appreciation with everyone.” – Samuel Sánchez Sr.

It was 1968, and I was savoring Mrs. Josefa L. Sambrano’s gorditas at the San Elizario fiesta. There were butterflies in my belly as I conversed with José Cisneros, who would become a world-renowned pen-and-ink artist. We developed a friendship, and the lessons he gave me in his basement studio are memories I will keep forever.

My interest in history spawned at the age of 13. I taught myself to draw, then paint, and continued to practice as I started my family. I was blessed to have several works published in books and national magazines, True West and Order of the Indian Wars among them.

“I run my fingers over the source material for texture. I hold it up to the light for color. I hold it next to other materials for pairing. It’s an art and a science.” – Alyssa Sánchez

Confession: When I was in middle school, I stole my dad’s needle-nose pliers. The blue ones. (Sorry, Dad!) But I still use them to this day.

Natural materials are my true inspiration: real gems, stones and shells. They just have an elegance and presence about them that faux pieces simply cannot touch. My childhood experiences camping, fishing and long road trips all over the Southwest developed in me an uncompromising taste for nature’s true gifts.
